  • Linear and Nonlinear Programming

    作者:David G. Luenberger

This third edition of the classic textbook in Optimization has been fully revised and updated. It comprehensively covers modern theoretical insights in this crucial computing area, and will be required reading for analysts and operations researchers in a variety of fields. • Magical Mathematics

    作者:Persi Diaconis,Ron G

"Magical Mathematics" reveals the secrets of amazing, fun-to-perform card tricks - and the profound mathematical ideas behind them - that will astound even the most accomplished magician. Persi Diaconis and Ron Graham provide easy, step-by-step instructions for each trick, explaining how to set up the effect and offering tips on what to say and do while performing it. Each card trick introduces a new mathematical idea, and varying the tricks in turn takes readers to the very threshold of today's mathematical knowledge. For example, the Gilbreath Principle - a fantastic effect where the cards remain in control despite being shuffled - is found to share an intimate connection with the Mandelbrot set. Other card tricks link to the mathematical secrets of combinatorics, graph theory, number theory, topology, the Riemann hypothesis, and even Fermat's last theorem. Diaconis and Graham are mathematicians as well as skilled performers with decades of professional experience between them. In this book they share a wealth of conjuring lore, including some closely guarded secrets of legendary magicians. "Magical Mathematics" covers the mathematics of juggling and shows how the I Ching connects to the history of probability and magic tricks both old and new. It tells the stories - and reveals the best tricks - of the eccentric and brilliant inventors of mathematical magic. "Magical Mathematics" exposes old gambling secrets through the mathematics of shuffling cards, explains the classic street-gambling scam of three-card monte, traces the history of mathematical magic back to the thirteenth century and the oldest mathematical trick - and much more.
  • Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis

    作者:Knut Sydsaeter,Peter

Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis, third edition The market leading European text, Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis, third Edition, continues to provide an invaluable introduction to the mathematical tools that undergraduate economists need New to this edition: * New: Economic concepts, definitions and topics covered in the book are listed on the inside front cover. * New: Short answers to almost all of the more than 1000 problems in the book for students to self check. * New Students Manual with extended worked answers to selected problems in the book. *New sections on elementary differential equations and difference equations included in this volume for the first time. * New and improved figures in colour for the first time. *New Instructor's Manual now contains a large range of additional supplementary problems, simple to advanced, suitable for use in examinations. Knut Sydsater is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics in the Economics Department at the University of Oslo, where, since 1965, he has had extensive experience in teaching mathematics for economists. He has also given graduate courses in dynamic optimization at Berkeley and Gothenborg. He has written and co-authored a number of books, of which several have been translated into many languages. In recent years he has been engaged in an attempt to improve the teaching of mathematics for economists in several African universities. PeterHammond is currently the Marie Curie Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick, where he moved in 2007 after becoming an Emeritus Professor at Stanford University. During the 1970s he was a Lecturer, then Professor in Economics at the University of Essex. He completed a BA in Mathematics and a PhD in Economics at the University of Cambridge. He has been an editor of the Review of Economic Studies, of the Econometric Society Monograph Series, and has served on the editorial boards of Social Choice and Welfare and the Journal of Public Economic Theory. He has published more than 100 academic papers in journals and books, mostly on economic theory and mathematical economics. Also available: Further Mathematics for Economic Analysis published in a new 2ND EDITION by Sydsater, Hammond, Seierstad and Strom (ISBN 9780273713289) Further Mathematics for Economic Analysis is a companion volume to Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate economics students whose requirements go beyond the material found in this text. Do you require just a couple of additional further topics? See the front of this text for information on our Custom Publishing Programme. 'The book is by far the best choice one can make for a course on mathematics for economists. It is exemplary in finding the right balance between mathematics and economic examples.' Dr. Roelof J. Stroeker, Erasmus University, Rotterdam. I have long been a fan of these books, most books on Maths for Economists are either mathematically unsound or very boring or both! Sydsaeter & Hammond certainly do not fall into either of these categories.' • Algebraic and Analytic Geometry

    作者:Amnon Neeman

This textbook, for an undergraduate course in modern algebraic geometry, recognizes that the typical undergraduate curriculum contains a great deal of analysis and, by contrast, little algebra. Because of this imbalance, it seems most natural to present algebraic geometry by highlighting the way it connects algebra and analysis; the average student will probably be more familiar and more comfortable with the analytic component. The book therefore focuses on Serre's GAGA theorem, which perhaps best encapsulates the link between algebra and analysis. GAGA provides the unifying theme of the book: we develop enough of the modern machinery of algebraic geometry to be able to give an essentially complete proof, at a level accessible to undergraduates throughout. The book is based on a course which the author has taught, twice, at the Australian National University.

  • Mathematical Events of the Twentieth Century

    作者:Sinai, Ya G. 编

This book contains several contributions on the most outstanding events in the development of twentieth century mathematics, representing a wide variety of specialities in which Russian and Soviet mathematicians played a considerable role. The articles are written in an informal style, from mathematical philosophy to the description of the development of ideas, personal memories and give a unique account of personal meetings with famous representatives of twentieth century mathematics who exerted great influence in its development. This book will be of great interest to mathematicians, who will enjoy seeing their own specialities described with some historical perspective. Historians will read it with the same motive, and perhaps also to select topics for future investigation.
